Tava offers psychiatric medication management sessions through select sponsored benefit programs and in select states, including Utah, Arkansas and Texas. This article answers common questions about seeing a Tava prescriber for medication management.
I have an existing Tava account. How do I book a medication management session?
If you are eligible for medication management through Tava, you’ll see a banner on your Tava home screen that says “Your organization offers medication management!”
Click “Schedule” to get started. We’ll match you with a qualified prescriber, and help you schedule your first appointment.
I am new to Tava. How do I book a medication management session?
Start by creating an account at care.tavahealth.com. Be sure to include your employer or sponsor organization, as well as state, to check if you’re eligible for med management.
Will I see the same provider for talk therapy and medication management?
No. Your prescriber will be a different licensed practitioner who specializes in evaluating and managing medications, but your therapist and prescriber can collaborate together on your treatment plan.
What if I’m uncertain if medication is right for me?
The initial session will explore whether or not medication is right for you. Your prescriber will explain what medication can address, review possible side effects, and discuss non‑medication options so you can make an informed decision together.
What if I already have a provider who manages my medications?
Some people choose to transition their care to Tava for convenience and closer integration with therapy, or you can continue with their current prescriber and use Tava solely for therapy.
What forms do I need to complete before my appointment?
When you schedule a medication management session, you’ll be asked to share a list of your current medications and any food or medication allergies. If further information is needed, your prescriber will contact you.
What happens during the first (evaluation) session?
Your prescriber will review your mental health history, current symptoms, previous treatments, and any medications you’re taking. You’ll talk through potential medication options, benefits and side effects, and decide together on next steps. Initial sessions last 30-50 minutes. All questions are welcome!
What’s covered in follow‑up sessions?
Follow‑up sessions focus on how you’re doing on the current plan. You’ll discuss progress, side effects, dosage adjustments if needed, and any new concerns. Follow-up appointments last about 10-15 minutes. These appointments help your prescriber fine‑tune treatment over time.
Can I use insurance for medication management sessions?
Yes, in some cases. Tava Health partners with select insurance plans that may be able to cover your medication management sessions. If your plan is in‑network, you will be able to select this option when scheduling.
Do medication management sessions count against my sponsored session limit?
Yes. If your organization offers sponsored sessions, they can be used flexibly for both talk therapy or medication management.
Is this for people already on medication, or for people considering medication?
Both. If you already take medication, Tava can support ongoing management. If you’re exploring whether medication might help, you can schedule an evaluation with a Tava prescriber to discuss your options.
Is the goal to get me off medication?
The goal is your long‑term mental health. For some people, discontinuing medication becomes appropriate over time and is done gradually under clinical guidance. Others benefit from ongoing treatment. Your prescriber will tailor recommendations to your unique needs.
Which prescriptions are eligible through Tava?
Tava prescribers can prescribe non‑controlled psychiatric medications (for example, many antidepressants or anti‑anxiety medications) when clinically appropriate. Controlled substances are not prescribed through this program.
