Tava Health offers therapy services for minors, with different options depending on your child's age. This article walks through eligibility, account setup, how to schedule, and how billing works.
Minors Aged 13–18: Individual Therapy
Minors aged 13 to 18 can access individual therapy sessions through Tava Health. Standard insurance policies may cover these sessions. Here's how to get started:
- Create a separate Tava account for the minor using a unique email address (it cannot be the same as the parent or guardian's email).
- Enter the minor's date of birth during signup. Because the date of birth indicates the client is under 18, Tava will prompt you to provide a parent or guardian's email address.
- Complete the consent form. Tava will send a digital Minor Consent Form to the parent or guardian's email. The parent or guardian must review and sign this form before the minor can begin scheduling therapy sessions.
Once the consent form is complete, the minor can browse provider's, schedule sessions, and access care through their own Tava account.
Children Under 13: Family Therapy
Tava does not offer individual therapy for children under the age of 13. However, children under 13 can participate in therapy through family therapy sessions, as long as a parent or guardian is present for the entire session. A Minor Consent Form is not required for this type of session.
Family therapy can address a wide range of needs — not just family dynamics. Even if your child is the one experiencing challenges, a family therapy session with a trained family therapist can be a great way to support them, with you right there in the room.
| Important: All family members must join the session from the same location and device. |
How to Schedule a Family Therapy Session
Family therapy sessions are scheduled through the parent or guardian's Tava account. Your child under 13 will not have a separate Tava account.
Step 1: Find a provider who offers family therapy.
Not all Tava providers offer family therapy. When browsing providers at care.tavahealth.com, look for providers who list family therapy as one of their session types.
If you already see a Tava provider for your own individual sessions and they do not offer family therapy, you don't need to switch. You can add a second provider to your care team who specializes in family therapy — just reach out via the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your screen, or email client-support@tavahealth.com.
Step 2: Schedule the session and select "Family" as the session type.
Once you've chosen a family therapist, click "Schedule" next to their name and select Family as the session type.
Step 3: Message your provider before the session (recommended).
We highly recommend reaching out to your provider before your first family session. This gives the provider helpful context about your child's needs and allows them to prepare. Your provider may also send along intake questions or forms for you and your child to complete ahead of time. To message your provider, click the envelope icon on the top right of your Tava homepage.
Billing for Family Therapy Sessions
Since family therapy sessions are scheduled under the parent or guardian's Tava account, billing follows that account's coverage setup.
| Important: Family therapy sessions are not covered by health insurance through Tava. They can be paid for using employer credits, or out of pocket. |
Employer Credits
Family therapy sessions count against your employer credit limit. If you have employer credit sessions remaining, family therapy sessions will be deducted from that balance. As with all session types, Tava bills your employer credits first as long as you have sessions remaining — even if you also have insurance or a credit card on file.
If Both Parents or Guardians Have Employer Credits
The session is billed to whichever parent's account is used to schedule it. If your spouse or partner also has a Tava account with their own employer credits, they can schedule the family therapy session under their account instead, and the session would come out of their balance.
Opting for Cash Pay Instead of Employer Credits
If you prefer not to use your employer credits for family therapy, you can switch your coverage to cash pay. To do this, click your profile picture in the top right corner of your Tava account, navigate to Billing Info, and update your payment method before scheduling the session.
We're here to help. If you have questions about minor consent, family therapy, or payment options, reach out via the chat bubble in the bottom right corner of your screen or email us at client-support@tavahealth.com.
