Throughout your journey with Tava, you'll complete mental health assessments — starting at intake and continuing as a regular part of your care. These assessments help you reflect on your mental health, give your provider valuable insight, and track your progress over time.
Why take an assessment?
- Self-reflection: Understand your mental health and identify areas to focus on
- Provider insight: Helps your provider tailor sessions to your current needs
- Progress tracking: Measure changes over time and discuss them in therapy
- Urgent support: If your responses indicate a crisis, you'll be directed to appropriate resources
Many people find it difficult to express their mental health needs verbally. Assessments help put experiences into words without pressure.
How the assessment works
The Tava Mental Health Assessment includes two widely used, evidence-based screening tools:
- GAD-7 (7 questions): Assesses anxiety symptoms like worry, nervousness, and restlessness over the past two weeks
- PHQ-9 (9 questions): Evaluates depression symptoms including low energy, sleep issues, and concentration difficulties
- If you indicate thoughts of suicide or self-harm, you'll be asked additional screening questions and directed to crisis resources if needed
Pre-session assessments
If it's been more than 14 days since your last assessment, you'll be prompted to complete one before your next session. This helps your provider start every appointment with a current picture of how you're doing.
You'll be reminded via your appointment reminders (text and email) and on your Tava home page. For virtual sessions, if you haven't completed your assessment before joining, you'll be guided through it in the waiting room — it takes about 2–3 minutes.
Taking assessments at other times
- You'll receive automated assessment reminders in every appointment email or text if it's been more than 14 days since you've last taken last one
- You can take an assessment at any time by visiting the Assessments tab in your account
Viewing your results
Access your results anytime in the Assessments tab (click your profile picture in the top right corner). Your past scores are displayed in a chart and list format. Click any assessment to see specific questions and responses.
If your scores aren't improving, consider discussing next steps with your provider.
Keep in mind that while these assessments are evidence-based, your results don't constitute an official diagnosis. Talk with your provider about any questions or concerns.
